CHINOOK CRASH

American and ARVN investigators sift through rubble of a Chinook Helicopter, a CH47, that crashed in the Vietnam jungle near Firebase Maryanne on July 21, 1971.

Whenever a helicopter went down in South Vietnam, an investigative team was sent to examine the site and to recover parts such as engines and transmissions. Investigators attempted to learn the roles of human error and mechanical failure.

This Chinook, flown by 2 U.S. Army pilots, had been transporting 55 specially trained ARVN Rangers and their equipment. The final report concluded this Chinook had been overloaded.
