The American M-101 105mm Howitzer was a light and maneuverable weapon
employed in the Fire Support System throughout South Vietnam.
Each Howitzer required a crew of eight.
The main purpose of the fire bases was to provide support for the infantry in the field.
However, after the North Vietnamese Army acquired Soviet built M-46 130mm Field Guns, with ranges
more than double that of the American Howitzer, the FSB artillery was at a serious
 disadvantage.
